21-Day Europe and Cruise Vacation Itinerary: Paris, Switzerland, Italy & the Greek Isles

They Wanted to See It All — So We Made Sure They Did
Some trips are vacations. And then some trips are something else entirely — the kind you spend years dreaming about, the kind you plan with your whole heart, the kind that you know, even before you leave, will stay with you forever.
That's exactly what Russell and Ella Simpson's trip was.
Russell is 68. Ella is 62. And when they came to me to start planning, they were clear about one thing: this was their bucket list trip. They wanted to see Europe — really see it — and they weren't planning on going back. So whatever they did, they wanted to do it right.
Twenty-one days. Six cities. Four countries. One Royal Caribbean cruise through the Greek Isles. And memories that I am certain will last the rest of their lives.
Here's how we built their Europe and cruise vacation itinerary, and what they loved, what surprised them, and what I would tell anyone considering a trip like this.

Paris: The City of Light (With a Few Shadows)
Russell and Ella arrived in Paris after a 9-hour Premium Economy flight from Dallas — stepping off the plane directly into the City of Light.
They stayed at the Park Lane Paris, a beautifully renovated boutique hotel right in the heart of the 8th arrondissement, within walking distance of everything that makes Paris iconic.
Over three days, they experienced the city the way it deserves to be experienced:
Hop-on hop-off bus with the Tootbus — a full day of exploring at their own pace, from the Opera House to the Champs-Élysées to Notre-Dame
Eiffel Tower 2nd floor with priority access, a Seine River cruise, and a panoramic city tour
A full-day excursion to Monet's Garden in Giverny and Versailles — wandering through Monet's legendary water lilies in the morning, then the Hall of Mirrors in the afternoon
A note about Paris: Russell and Ella found the city itself a bit less welcoming than the rest of their trip — something many travelers experience in Paris. The sights are undeniably spectacular, but the warmth of the people left something to be desired compared to what they would find later in Switzerland. That said, the experiences they had — Giverny, Versailles, the Eiffel Tower at golden hour — were absolutely worth it.
The Goway Difference — Right From the Start: While they were in Paris, labor strikes were threatening their Eiffel Tower tour. Rather than letting Russell and Ella find out at the tower, Goway's on-the-ground team reached out via WhatsApp ahead of time — communicating exactly what to expect and advising them to arrive early. The tour went as planned, and because they were prepared rather than surprised, the experience was seamless. That kind of proactive communication is something you simply cannot get when you book on your own.
Switzerland: Their Absolute Favorite
If Paris was a complicated love story, Switzerland was a full-on romance.
From Paris, Russell and Ella took the train directly to Zurich — a scenic 4-hour journey through the French and Swiss countryside. No airports. No checked bags. Just a comfortable First Class train ride and a view that gets more breathtaking the further you go.
They spent two nights in Zurich at the Glockenhof Hotel, steps from the famous Bahnhofstrasse shopping street and Lake Zurich, where they took a guided city tour through Zurich's historic old town, past the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology where Albert Einstein once taught, and to the stunning Fraumünster Church with its famous Chagall stained glass windows.
Then they moved on to Lucerne — and that's where the trip changed for them entirely.
They checked into the Grand Hotel National Luzern, a magnificent 5-star property on the shores of Lake Lucerne with mountain panoramas stretching in every direction. Founded by the legendary César Ritz and Auguste Escoffier, this hotel is the kind of place that makes you feel like you're living inside a painting.
The highlight of Switzerland — and honestly of the entire trip — was the Mount Pilatus Golden Roundtrip. They rode panoramic gondolas up the mountain, then transferred to the "Dragon Ride" aerial cableway to the very summit. From the top, the views over Lake Lucerne and the Alps are genuinely hard to describe. The descent was equally memorable — aboard the world's steepest cogwheel railway, winding down through the mountain to the lakeshore, followed by a relaxing boat cruise back into Lucerne.
Russell and Ella told me Switzerland was their favorite stop — hands down. The scenery was breathtaking, yes, but what really moved them was the people. Warm, friendly, genuinely welcoming in a way that made every interaction feel like a gift.
If you are ever debating whether to include Switzerland in a European itinerary — include it. Always include it.
Italy: Milan, Venice, and the Eternal City
After Switzerland, Russell and Ella made their way south through Italy — three cities, each completely different, each unforgettable in its own way.
Milan
Milan was a brief but beautiful overnight stop — a chance to rest, explore the city's legendary fashion and design district, and soak in the buzzing energy of Italy's most cosmopolitan city before moving on. They stayed at Starhotels Anderson, perfectly positioned opposite the Centrale train station for an easy onward journey.
Venice
Venice is unlike anywhere else on earth. And arriving by water taxi from Santa Lucia Station directly to the Hotel Rialto — a 4-star property with a Grand Canal view — is one of those travel moments you never forget.
Russell and Ella spent two nights in Venice with a perfectly curated itinerary:
A private walking tour of Saint Mark's Square and the hidden streets of Venice with a local English-speaking guide — learning the stories of Marco Polo, Casanova, the Doge's Palace, and the ancient merchant empires that built this impossible city
A private gondola ride through the narrow canals of Venice — the quintessential Venetian experience, gliding beneath stone bridges and past centuries-old palazzos in complete silence
Another moment where Goway came through: Before the trip, the team noticed that some of the transfers in Venice could pose mobility challenges. Without being asked, they proactively switched the transfer vehicle from a standard car to a larger minivan to better accommodate Russell and Ella's needs — and reached out personally to make sure they felt supported and comfortable. That kind of attentive, human care is something no booking app can offer.
Rome
The Eternal City was their final land stop before boarding the cruise — and they made every hour count.
They stayed at The Building Hotel, a beautifully restored historic property near the Termini station, just minutes from Rome's greatest landmarks.
Their Rome itinerary was built around one extraordinary full-day experience: Ancient Rome and the Vatican with Lunch. From the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill to the Roman Forum, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica — all with skip-the-line access and a knowledgeable guide. Eight hours of history, art, and wonder that left them speechless.
The next morning, they transferred by private vehicle to Civitavecchia port — and the next chapter of their adventure began.
The Greek Isles: Seven Nights Aboard Odyssey of the Seas
After nearly two weeks of trains, cobblestone streets, and continental breakfasts, Russell and Ella stepped aboard Odyssey of the Seas and sailed into the Greek Isles.
This portion of the trip I booked directly with Royal Caribbean — coordinating the cruise to connect seamlessly with the land itinerary so there were no gaps, no stress, and no complicated logistics to figure out.
They sailed in an Ocean View Balcony stateroom — waking up each morning to a new horizon, a new destination, a new memory waiting to happen.
Their 7-Night Greek Isles Itinerary:
Rome (Civitavecchia) — Embarkation
Santorini, Greece — The iconic whitewashed cliffs, blue-domed churches, and sunsets that don't look real
Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey — One of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world
Mykonos, Greece — Charming windmills, crystal blue water, and the most beautiful little town imaginable
Naples, Italy — Gateway to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast
Rome (Civitavecchia) — Disembarkation
After seven nights of waking up somewhere new — no unpacking, no airports, no logistics — they flew home from Rome to Dallas in Premium Economy, arriving back on October 5th with full hearts, full camera rolls, and a trip they will never stop talking about.
How This Trip Was Built — And Why It Mattered
A trip like this doesn't happen by accident. It takes careful coordination across multiple vendors, countries, time zones, and transportation types — and one person holding all of it together.

For a meaningful first visit to Europe covering multiple countries, I recommend a minimum of 14 days — and 21 days is even better if your schedule allows. Rushing between cities every day is exhausting and doesn't give you time to actually experience a destination. The pace of Russell and Ella's trip — spending 2-3 nights in each city — was ideal for their age and travel style.
Is it possible to combine a European land tour with a cruise?
Absolutely — and it's one of my favorite ways to structure a Europe trip. The land portion lets you go deep into cities and countryside experiences, while the cruise handles the logistics of moving between destinations without constant packing and unpacking. Rome is a particularly perfect transition point because Civitavecchia port is just a short transfer away.

Premium Economy sits between Economy and Business Class — offering wider seats, more legroom, better meals, and additional recline compared to standard Economy. Arriving in Europe rested and comfortable rather than exhausted from a cramped overnight flight makes a significant difference in how you experience your first day. How do you handle mobility considerations when planning international travel?
I ask about mobility and physical considerations at the beginning of every planning conversation — not as an afterthought, but as a core part of building the right itinerary. Cobblestones, stairs, walking distances, transfer vehicles — these all matter, especially on long international trips. Do I need travel insurance for a trip like this?
Yes — absolutely, always. A trip of this length and investment carries real risk if something goes wrong — illness, injury, flight cancellation, or unexpected events at your destination. Travel insurance protects your investment and your peace of mind. I recommend purchasing it at the time of deposit so you have maximum coverage from day one.
